Highlights and outcomes from Stanbic IBTC Conference

Highlight. Nigeria’s economy is projected to record modest growth in 2026, driven by improved oil output and resilience in non oil sectors. Inflationary pressures are expected to ease compared to 2025 though food and energy costs remain key risks. Foreign exchange reserves closed 2025 at $45.45bn, providing a buffer against external shocks. Oil production rose to 1.44 mbpd in late 2025, with expectations of further stability this year.

Risks: Oil price volatility remains a major vulnerability for Nigeria’s fiscal and external accounts. Global geopolitical tensions could disrupt trade flows and investment inflows. External shocks from global inflation and monetary tightening may affect Nigeria’s financing conditions.

Opportunities: Diversification – expanding into agriculture, manufacturing, and services to reduce reliance on oil revenues. Risk management – hedging strategies to mitigate FX and inflation risks. ESG alignment – sustainability and governance practices are increasingly critical for attracting investment. Regional integration – leveraging AfCFTA to access wider African markets.

Conclusion: The Stanbic IBTC Economic Outlook 2026 reflects cautious optimism. Nigeria’s fundamentals are improving, but external shocks and structural challenges remain. Businesses that adopt resilient strategies, diversify operations, and align with sustainability imperatives will be best positioned to thrive in the year ahead.
